Los Angeles police have decided to junk plans to identify possible extremists by mapping the city's Muslim population.
Plans for the map sparked vocal protests from Muslim groups and civil libertarians.
Los Angeles Police Chief Michael Downing said Wednesday the map idea,
which was to be developed in conjunction with the University of
Southern California's National Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of
Terrorism Events, would be dropped but efforts to reach out to the
Muslim community would continue, the Los Angeles Times reported.
"Muslim Americans were very disturbed and concerned about the
ramifications of the plan and having their privacy invaded," Salam
Al-Marayati, executive director of the Muslim Public Affairs Council,
told the Times. "Downing's statement that he's pulling the plan says
the LAPD is very open to positive community engagement, input and
participation. It's the first step to very healthy dialogue between
Muslim Americans and the city of Los Angeles."
